On your first trip to Onna Village, don’t plan too many stops just because they look close together on a map. Onna stretches along the coast from north to south, so your route changes depending on whether you stay in Maeda, around Cape Manzamo, or in Nakama.
This itinerary assumes you’ll rent a car and stay at the same property for 2 nights. Keep arrival day brief in the south, travel from central to northern Onna on Day 2, and stay near your accommodation on departure day. If you’re based in the north, reverse the Day 2 route.
TL;DR
- A practical 2-night, 3-day route that keeps arrival day light, makes Day 2 the main sightseeing day, and leaves a buffer on departure day
- How to reverse the Day 2 route when you stay in Nakama, around Cape Manzamo, or in Maeda
- What to cut if you’re traveling without a car or face poor sea conditions, rain, a typhoon, or a delayed arrival
The basic 2-night, 3-day plan: keep arrival day light, make Day 2 your main sightseeing day, and leave time for departure
| Day | Main area | Basic plan | How to keep it manageable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Southern Onna: Maeda and Nakadomari | Depending on your arrival time, choose 1–2 stops from Onna no Eki, the Cape Maeda area, and Ryukyu Mura. Check in at or after 16:00 | If your arrival is delayed, skip sightseeing and go straight to your accommodation |
| Day 2 | Central → northern Onna | Travel from the Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach area to Nakama and Kariyushi Beach | Pick 1 sea activity as the day’s priority, and check operations and sea conditions that day |
| Day 3 | Near your accommodation | Take a short walk, shop, or revisit just 1 missed stop | Set aside time first for refueling, returning the rental car, airport procedures, and traffic |
The Onna Village Tourism Association describes Onna as a long, narrow village measuring about 27 km north to south and about 4.2 km east to west, with Cape Maeda in the south and Cape Manzamo in the central area. Okinawa Prefecture’s official tourism site also describes the Onna Coast as an area served by National Route 58 and accessible by car and bus (Sources: Onna Tabi Navi / VISIT OKINAWA JAPAN: Onna Coast).
For planning purposes, this article groups Maeda and Nakadomari as “southern Onna,” Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach as “central Onna,” and Nakama and Kariyushi Beach as “northern Onna.” These labels are used only for this itinerary; they are not official administrative divisions.
For a satisfying 2-night, 3-day stay, group places in the same direction on the same day instead of counting how many sights you can fit in.
5 decisions to make before you leave
1. How much time you actually have on arrival and departure days
Your flight’s arrival time is not when sightseeing starts. You can set off only after immigration, baggage claim, the transfer to the rental-car office, the rental briefing, and loading your luggage.
The same applies on departure day. Work backward from when you want to reach the airport, allowing time for refueling, returning the rental car, the airport transfer, checking bags, and security. Add only 1 “last stop,” and only if that buffer remains.
2. The documents and drivers you need in Japan
Before you travel, confirm which driving credentials are valid in Japan, which documents your rental-car company requires, and the rules for left-hand traffic, road signs, and parking. For a longer driving day, decide whether more than one person can drive and where you’ll stop for breaks. See our Okinawa rental-car driving guide for international travelers for the basics.
3. Your accommodation’s exact address and final approach
Public maps for private rentals may show only an approximate location, and you may receive the full address after your booking is confirmed. Treat your post-booking arrival instructions as definitive for the address to enter in your navigation system, the parking location, the route to the entrance, and the check-in method (Sources: Onna Village Kibogaoka Log House B official property page / Mishuku Onna 302 official property page / Ocean Resort Cape Maeda 104 official property page).
4. Dinner plans and groceries
Decide in advance whether you’ll cook, eat out, or pick up takeaway after you arrive. For a large group or family with children, it’s easier to buy groceries, drinks, and breakfast before check-in than to search for a restaurant when everyone is tired.
Restaurant and market hours, regular closing days, sellouts, and reservation rules can change. Don’t rely on just 1 option: keep 1 choice near your accommodation and another along your route.
5. A backup for days when the sea is off limits
A calm-looking sea isn’t necessarily safe. At Cape Maeda, swimming is not allowed when bad weather or poor sea conditions close the stairs to the water. Follow the official same-day swimming information and instructions from the operator you booked (Source: official Cape Maeda website).
Even if going into the sea is your trip’s main purpose, choose alternatives in advance: a cultural experience, a market, a meal, or a short walk on land.
Day 1: keep Maeda and Onna no Eki brief, then check in from 16:00
Start arrival day around Maeda and Nakadomari in southern Onna. Cut stops based on your arrival time and the weather.
If you have almost half a day: make Ryukyu Mura or Maeda your main destination
Ryukyu Mura brings together traditional houses registered as Tangible Cultural Properties, Eisa dance and other cultural presentations, food, and craft activities. Parts of the site are outdoors, so factor in rain, wind, and your group’s stamina. Check current hours, admission conditions, and events on the official website (Source: official Ryukyu Mura website).
To explore Ryukyu Mura properly, limit the rest of the day to shopping or a brief viewpoint stop. Adding a sea activity at Cape Maeda on the same day can leave you rushing to check in if you’re delayed or need time to change.
If you have 2–3 hours: shop at Onna no Eki and take a short walk
Onna no Eki Nakayukui Market is a farmers’ market with local produce, Okinawan food, and souvenirs. It’s a convenient one-stop option for arrival-day lunch, drinks, and breakfast shopping for the next morning. Check current hours and shop information on the official website (Source: official Onna no Eki website).
If time and weather allow, add a short walk around Cape Maeda without going into the sea. Follow access restrictions and posted signs around the cliffs and shoreline, and don’t take risks after sunset or in bad weather. Our walking guide to Diamond Beach and Cape Maeda can help you choose a route.
If you’re delayed: skip sightseeing and head to your accommodation
If you expect to reach Onna Village after 16:00, don’t add detours for sunset views. Prioritize grocery shopping and check-in. If your expected arrival differs from the accommodation’s instructions, don’t attempt to enter without guidance. Contact your booking provider and follow the specified check-in procedure.
Day 1 checklist
- If you plan to enter the sea, check Cape Maeda’s same-day information and your tour operator’s instructions
- Check current hours for Ryukyu Mura or Onna no Eki
- Confirm the check-in method for 16:00 or later and the exact address
- Have dinner, drinks, and food for the next morning sorted
- Check the accommodation’s directions as well as the map for the final approach, especially if you’ll drive it for the first time after dark
Day 2: from Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach to Nakama and Kariyushi Beach
Day 2 is your main touring day. The standard route runs from central to northern Onna, but you can reverse it to match sea conditions and where you’re staying.
Morning: visit Cape Manzamo, then continue to Nabee Beach
Cape Manzamo is a scenic viewpoint over coastal cliffs and a grass-covered plateau. Its official website says viewing is available until sunset and notes that the facility may close during natural disasters such as typhoons. Check the latest information for the day of your visit (Source: official Cape Manzamo website).
Next, head to Nabee Beach in Onna Village Seaside Park. Located between Cape Manzamo and Manza Beach, it lists parking, showers, changing rooms, and other facilities. Use same-day operating information to confirm whether swimming or specific activities are available (Source: official Nabee Beach website).
If you won’t enter the sea, spend the morning visiting Cape Manzamo and enjoying the coastal scenery. If you swim, allow time to change, shower, and sort out wet belongings.
Midday: eat in central Onna, then travel north
Have lunch around Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach or along National Route 58 as you head north. Before choosing a restaurant, confirm that it’s open that day, has parking, and can seat your group.
If you plan to eat around the Blue Cave and Maeda on another day, see our lunch and cafe guide for Cape Maeda and the Blue Cave. It compares local options and explains how to check opening hours.
Afternoon: continue to Nakama and Kariyushi Beach
In Nakama, consider the area around Kariyushi Beach. Its official website covers the general swimming season, visitor access, facilities, and same-day weather and operations. Conditions may vary by where you’re staying, so check the requirements and fees for your visit date (Source: official Kariyushi Beach website).
If you swam at Nabee Beach in the morning, don’t add another marine activity in the afternoon. Focus on scenery, rest, and shopping. If Kariyushi Beach is your main afternoon destination, limit the morning in central Onna to Cape Manzamo.
Day 2 checklist
- Check same-day operations for Cape Manzamo, Nabee Beach, and Kariyushi Beach
- Choose either the morning or afternoon sea visit as your one main activity
- Bring bags or containers to separate wet clothes, towels, and sandy items inside the car
- Check opening and parking conditions for your lunch choice and a backup
- Plan a return route that doesn’t leave you driving unfamiliar roads for a long time after sunset
Reverse the Day 2 route to match where you stay
The same stops can involve very different amounts of backtracking, depending on where you start and end the day.
| Accommodation area | Recommended Day 2 direction | How to arrange the day | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nakama and northern Onna | North → central | Kariyushi Beach in the morning, then Nabee Beach and Cape Manzamo in the afternoon | Checkout at Onna Village Kibogaoka Log House B is before 10:00, so don’t pack central and southern Onna into departure day |
| Cape Manzamo area and central Onna | Central → north, or south → central | Start in the direction with better sea conditions and finish by heading back toward your accommodation | Mishuku Onna 302 has free parking for 1 car. If you’ll exceed that limit, adjust the number of cars and your transport plan before booking |
| Maeda and southern Onna | Central → north | Visit Cape Manzamo in the morning, continue to Nakama after lunch, and return south in the evening | The return is longer, so use same-day road conditions to set your afternoon finish time |
If you stay in Nakama, reversing the standard itinerary to “north → central” shortens your morning drive. If you stay in Maeda, cover southern Onna on Day 1, then travel “central → north” on Day 2 to avoid retracing your route. From central Onna, you can start in whichever direction has better sea conditions.
Day 3: pick just one short stop near your accommodation
On departure day, don’t travel from one end of the village to the other before heading to the airport. Work backward from your checkout time and flight time before adding a stop.
If you stayed in Nakama
Checkout at Onna Village Kibogaoka Log House B is before 10:00. Choose only somewhere with officially confirmed early-morning access, or make a brief scenic or shopping stop near the property. If you covered northern Onna well the previous day, continue directly toward the airport (Source: Onna Village Kibogaoka Log House B official property page).
If you stayed around Cape Manzamo
Checkout at Mishuku Onna 302 is before 11:00. Make a short stop only if you missed Cape Manzamo or the Nabee Beach area the previous day. First confirm it’s open and that you’ve left enough time for the airport (Source: Mishuku Onna 302 official property page).
If you stayed in Maeda
Checkout at Ocean Resort Cape Maeda 104 is before 11:00. Choose shopping at Onna no Eki, a short walk around Maeda, or Ryukyu Mura only if you have plenty of time. Leave sea activities out of the departure-day plan; sea conditions, changing, showering, and sorting your luggage make the timing unpredictable (Source: Ocean Resort Cape Maeda 104 official property page).
Work backward from your airport deadline
Add up all of the following, then set a sightseeing cutoff before that travel window begins.
- Travel from your accommodation or final stop to the gas station
- Travel from the gas station to the rental-car office
- Return procedures and the airport transfer
- Baggage check-in and security
- A buffer for traffic, wrong turns, and breaks
Prioritize the deadlines provided by your airline and rental-car company. Don’t cut this buffer just to keep a stop from the sample itinerary.
Without a car: don’t try to cover all 3 areas
You can reach Onna Village by bus, but its sights, accommodation, restaurants, and bus stops are not clustered in one place. Check current timetables, boarding points, service suspensions, and the final leg to your accommodation with your transport operator and booking provider (Sources: Onna Tabi Navi / VISIT OKINAWA JAPAN: Onna Coast).
For a 2-night, 3-day trip without a car, cover a smaller area.
- Staying in Nakama: focus on northern Onna, and arrange one round trip on the day you visit central Onna
- Staying around Cape Manzamo: focus on Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach, adding either southern or northern Onna, but not both
- Staying in Maeda: focus on Maeda and Nakadomari, using a bus or taxi only on the day you visit central Onna
When you’re carrying large suitcases, traveling with children or older adults, or dealing with bad weather, even a short walk from a bus stop to your accommodation can be difficult. Decide before you travel which legs need a taxi and how you’ll arrange the return. Drop any stop where you can’t secure a way back after dinner.
Backups for poor sea conditions, rain, typhoons, and delayed arrivals
| Situation | Drop from the plan | Choose instead | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Maeda stairs are closed | Snorkeling and entering the sea | Onna no Eki, Ryukyu Mura, or a safe place that does not require entering the sea | Official same-day swimming information and operator instructions |
| Swimming is not allowed at Nabee Beach or Kariyushi Beach | Swimming and marine activities | Cape Manzamo, a meal, shopping, or a cultural experience | Same-day operations and sea-condition information from each facility |
| Light rain | Extended time in the sea | A market, a meal, or a short cultural experience | Also check wind, lightning, visibility, and facility operations |
| Heavy rain or strong winds | Cliffs, the shoreline, and extended outdoor travel | Rest at your accommodation or use only nearby facilities confirmed open | Warnings, road conditions, and guidance from facilities and your accommodation |
| Typhoon approaching or passing | Nonessential travel | Follow instructions from your accommodation, airline, and rental-car company | Don’t decide on your own to continue sightseeing |
| Arrival at or after 16:00 | Day 1 sightseeing | Grocery shopping and check-in | Prioritize reaching your accommodation on time |
Ryukyu Mura includes outdoor areas, so it isn’t an automatic rainy-day option. In strong wind or rain, check whether it’s open and which parts of the grounds are available. If a typhoon or temporary change affects Onna no Eki, follow its official guidance as well.

Frequently asked questions
With a rental car, split the trip into southern Onna on arrival day, central and northern Onna on Day 2, and the area near your accommodation on departure day. This doesn’t mean packing multiple activities into each area. Make one sea activity the day’s priority, and cut stops if the weather is poor.
Trying to make the same number of stops isn’t realistic. Base the trip around your accommodation, choose only one or two of southern, central, and northern Onna, and arrange both the final leg from the bus stop and your journey back at night in advance.
If you’re staying in Maeda, consider Day 1 when you have plenty of time after arrival, or Day 2 when you have the full day. Follow your tour operator’s guidance on sea conditions and the meeting point. Delays matter more on departure day, so the basic plan doesn’t include a tour then. Check safety, what to bring, and how to choose a tour in our Blue Cave snorkeling guide.
You could eat and shop at Onna no Eki, try cultural or craft activities at Ryukyu Mura, or take your time over a meal at a restaurant that’s open. Ryukyu Mura has outdoor areas, however, so it isn’t always suitable in strong wind, heavy rain, or a typhoon. Check each facility’s same-day operations.
It depends on where you want to go. Choose Nakama if northern Onna and the Nago direction matter most, central Onna for Cape Manzamo and Nabee Beach, or Maeda if Cape Maeda or the Blue Cave is your priority. Reverse the Day 2 route to suit your accommodation and avoid retracing the same stretch.
If you spend 2 nights in Onna Village, avoid adding too many distant sights on arrival and departure days. Combine this plan with our 3-night, 4-day Okinawa main island itinerary for a wider route that includes Naha or northern Okinawa, and adjust it to avoid overlapping directions.
Summary: plan a route you can safely shorten
The basic 2-night, 3-day plan for Onna Village is to visit southern Onna briefly on Day 1 and check in at or after 16:00, travel from central to northern Onna on Day 2, and stay near your accommodation on Day 3. If you stay in Nakama, reverse Day 2 and travel from north to central Onna.
Skip the sea when conditions are poor, cut sightseeing when you’re delayed, and protect your airport buffer on departure day. The best first-trip itinerary is one that still works after you remove a stop.
