3 Nights, 4 Days in Okinawa from Taiwan: Where to Stay for Sea Views, Food and Shopping

Choose your base before filling 3 nights and 4 days: allow time for the sea, Naha's food and shopping, and the airport journey.

For food and shopping in Naha with a day by the sea, spend 3 nights in the same accommodation. If Churaumi Aquarium and the northern coast are your main priorities, start with 2 nights in the north and 1 night in Naha. These two options make it easier to match where you stay to the places you want to visit.

On a 3-night, 4-day trip, your flights determine how much time you have on arrival and departure days. Plan days 2 and 3 first, when you’re most likely to have a full day available. Decide how to divide your time between the sea, Okinawan food and shopping, then allow for airport transfers and luggage at either end.

This guide compares sample itineraries for 3 nights in Naha and a stay split between Naha and the north. It includes places to eat and shop, plus things to consider before renting a car. The itineraries are editorial suggestions. Store and transport details were checked against official information on 2026/10/1.

TL;DR

  • How to choose between 3 nights in Naha and a split stay, with two sample itineraries
  • Specific stops for the sea, Okinawan food and shopping
  • Transport, luggage, departure-day planning and choosing accommodation in Naha

First, decide how you want to spend time by the sea

Be a little more specific about wanting to visit Okinawa’s coast. Taking photos by the sea and changing into swimwear for a swim require different amounts of time and luggage.

What you want to do by the sea Where you could stay What to allow for
Look out over the sea between walks around town 3 nights in Naha Travel to and from the waterfront, plus breaks from sun or rain
Shop and spend the late afternoon by the coast 3 nights in Naha with a Chatan day trip, or 2 nights in Chatan and 1 in Naha Return transport, dinner timing and when you’ll get back
Focus on Churaumi Aquarium and the northern coast 2 nights in the north, such as around Motobu, and 1 in Naha Travel from the airport to the north and luggage on the day you change accommodation
Go swimming Choose the beach you want to swim at, then compare accommodation Swimming season and conditions on the day, changing, showers and wet belongings

You don’t need to carry swimwear and towels for everyone on a day devoted to seaside photos. On a swimming day, however, going straight to the shops without changing adds to both your luggage and your fatigue. Deciding whether you’re going to look at the sea or swim also helps you work out whether you’ll need to return to your accommodation.

Naminoue Beach: an option for combining Naha with the sea

The beach operator lists swimming hours from 9:00 to 18:00 from April to October, with changing rooms, showers and coin lockers. Charges vary by facility, and showers and lockers require 100-yen coins. If you plan to swim, take coins and a separate bag for wet items.Naminoue Beach: official visitor information

Include what happens after swimming in your schedule, such as a morning at the beach followed by changing and a break around lunchtime. Follow local guidance on whether swimming is permitted that day, and swap with your city plans if the weather is poor.

Compare 3 nights in Naha with split stays in Chatan or the north

Changing accommodation makes sense when it gives you more time at the places you want to visit. Choosing two places just because their photos appeal to you adds checkout, packing, travel and another check-in to the middle of your trip.

Stay arrangement Best suited to these priorities Practical trade-offs Decide before choosing
3 nights in the same Naha accommodation Food, city walks and shopping, with a day or half-day by the sea Round-trip travel on days out to Chatan or the north How far you want to travel on a day out
2 nights in Chatan and 1 in Naha Time by the coast from late afternoon into the evening Moving luggage on arrival and when changing accommodation Whether your arrival flight leaves time to reach Chatan, and transport with luggage if you have no car
2 nights in the north and 1 in Naha More time for Churaumi Aquarium and the northern coast Travelling all the way north on arrival day When you can leave the airport, who will drive and how to reach Naha for the final night

Churaumi Aquarium’s official FAQ gives a driving estimate of about 2 hours from Naha Airport via the expressway. This is road travel time, not a guaranteed arrival time including immigration, baggage collection, rental-car procedures and rest stops.Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: access FAQ

For a late arrival, a first night in Naha is easier to arrange. But 1 night in Naha, 1 in the north and 1 back in Naha means changing accommodation twice in a 3-night stay. Families with plenty of luggage should also compare staying all 3 nights in Naha with just one day in the north, or saving the north for a later trip.

Itinerary A: 3 nights in Naha, with time for the sea, food and shopping

The following example assumes your flight lets you spend your first evening in Naha. It isn’t a tour with fixed departure times, so days 2 and 3 can be swapped according to the weather.

Day Morning to lunchtime Afternoon Evening
Day 1 Fly from Taiwan to Naha; immigration and baggage collection Travel to your accommodation; arrange luggage handling if it’s before check-in Dinner nearby and a small grocery shop for breakfast
Day 2 See the sea at Naminoue Beach, or swim if permitted Change and take a break, then lunch at Makishi Public Market; visit Tsuboya if time allows Leave shopping bags at your accommodation before dinner
Day 3 More city exploring, or a leisurely breakfast Shopping at Naha Main Place in Omoromachi Okinawan dinner; pack and check luggage weight at your accommodation
Day 4 Breakfast, check the fridge and belongings, then check out Head to the airport in time for your flight Fly home according to your flight schedule

If you want a longer swim on day 2, move Tsuboya to day 3. You don’t have to fit swimming, the market and pottery shopping into the same day. Book one dinner that needs a reservation and leave the other activities flexible enough to shorten if you get tired.

Day 1: don’t buy all your groceries as soon as you arrive

For the first grocery shop, consider buying only the next morning’s breakfast, drinks for the immediate future and essential supplies. Buying 3 days of food before you know how often you’ll eat out can leave you deciding what to discard or take home before departure.

One option is MaxValu Makishi at 2-10-1 Makishi, Naha. Its official listing says it’s open 24 hours. It may suit a late shopping trip, but the prepared food or products you want may not be available at that hour.AEON Ryukyu: MaxValu Makishi

Note that **Makishi Public Market is at 2-10-1 Matsuo, while MaxValu Makishi is at 2-10-1 Makishi**. Their names and street numbers are similar, so include both the store name and district when searching a map.Makishi Public Market: official website

Day 2: decide how you want to order at the market

At Makishi Public Market, you can buy ingredients on the 1st floor and have them cooked at a restaurant on the 2nd floor, a service known as mochiage.Pay the shop for the ingredients and the restaurant for cooking; the cooking charge depends on the preparation. Don’t treat the displayed ingredient price as the total meal budget.Market guide: how to enjoy your visit

For a first visit, ask these questions before buying:

  1. Explain how many people will eat and roughly how much food you’d like.
  2. Ask which ingredients are available for mochiage and which restaurant will cook them.
  3. Confirm preparation, ingredient and cooking charges, and any rice or drinks you want to add.
  4. Buy once you’re comfortable with the total cost and quantity.

Choose mochiage if selecting the fish is part of the experience you want. If you’d rather know portions and prices in advance, order from a restaurant menu. Dotonbori, on the market’s 2nd floor, lists Okinawa soba and set meals. It’s an option for everyone to choose their own dish after exploring the market.Dotonbori: official market listing

The market’s overall opening hours are 8:00–22:00, but individual businesses differ. The official information lists last orders at the 2nd-floor restaurants as 20:00. Planning lunch here gives you more flexibility than relying on it for dinner after a late arrival. The market generally closes on the 4th Sunday of each month, with different arrangements in December and around New Year, so check the official calendar against your travel dates.Makishi Public Market: official website

Day 3: separate shopping for your stay from shopping to take home

Supermarkets, pottery shops and shopping centres serve different purposes. Share shopping priorities with your companions and choose the stops you need.

Shopping purpose Example stop How to choose
Breakfast, drinks and everyday supplies during your stay MaxValu Makishi Start with what you’ll use the next morning. Buy chilled food before returning to your accommodation, not before sightseeing
Find pottery to use in Okinawa Tsuboya Yachimun Street Consider everyday size, storage space, weight and packing
Compare food and household goods, with a meal break Naha Main Place Pick a few shops and allow shopping time and breaks for everyone

Tsuboya Yachimun Street has kilns and direct-sales shops along a street about 400 m long. Deciding on a use, such as a rice bowl or small plate for home, makes choosing pottery more rewarding than simply looking for something Okinawan. Please note that Naha Municipal Tsuboya Pottery Museum has announced a closure from 2026/9/1 to 2027/3/31. During this period, it isn’t an alternative for a rainy day. This closure information is separate from the opening arrangements of the street’s shops.Okinawa Story: Tsuboya Yachimun Street

Naha Main Place’s official shop directory lists food shops including KALDI COFFEE FARM, Kuze Fuku & Co. and LUPICIA, alongside restaurants and a food court. If you have a particular product in mind, check the individual shop’s information and hours. A directory listing doesn’t confirm stock of a specific product.Naha Main Place: shop directory

Check food souvenirs before buying them to take back to Taiwan

Taiwan’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency warns against bringing in meat and processed meat products, including examples of vacuum-packed products.Packaging or cooking alone doesn’t mean you can take a product home. Make separate lists for food to eat in Okinawa and souvenirs for Taiwan. Check official information before buying products containing meat.Taiwan Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency: traveller guidance

Try different ways to enjoy Okinawan food at breakfast, lunch and dinner

Making every meal a major event can crowd your itinerary with travel and waiting. Vary the experience: try one item at breakfast, eat at the market for lunch, and reserve just one evening for a leisurely dinner.

Breakfast option: Pork Tamago Onigiri at the Makishi Market branch

The official listing gives hours of 7:00–20:00, open daily, and a menu including classic pork-and-egg onigiri and versions with bitter melon tempura. The address is 2-8-35 Matsuo, Naha. It’s an option for breakfast around the market.Pork Tamago Onigiri: Makishi Market branch

On a morning when you’re heading north, decide whether you can allow for the detour and a queue. Opening hours don’t guarantee that you’ll finish breakfast by your preferred departure time. If leaving early matters, prepare breakfast the day before and save a café or shop breakfast for another day.

Dinner option: Suitenrou on Kokusai Street

Suitenrou offers Okinawan food, Ryukyuan dance and live sanshin music. Consider it for a night when you want a performance with your meal. The official live-performance charge is 1,400 yen for junior-high-school students and older, and 700 yen for elementary-school students. Budget for this separately from food, and discuss performance times, the view from your seats and conditions for children when booking.Suitenrou: official website

A quiet dinner and a meal with a performance offer different experiences of Okinawan food. If a companion prefers a calm meal, consider the atmosphere together before choosing.

For an evening in Chatan, replace the whole of day 2

With 3 nights in Naha, you can also devote day 2 to Chatan. American Village’s official website lists shopping, dining and entertainment in the area. Choose the shops you want to visit first, then combine them with time by the sea.American Village: official website

Without a car, one option is Tokyo Bus’s Chatan Direct Shuttle Bus. The official route runs from Naha Airport and the entrance to Kokusai Street to Chatan Gateway. One-way fares are 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary-school children; preschool children using a seat also need a child fare. Seats are first come, first served, without reservations. At the listed fares, a return journey from Naha for 2 adults costs 4,000 yen in total.Tokyo Bus: Chatan Direct Shuttle Bus

If you want to stay until late afternoon, check the return service and boarding point before planning your outward trip. Once you’ve chosen a return departure, finish shopping before it and add dinner only if time allows. Don’t stay in a shop until the last minute assuming you can definitely board your preferred service.

Use this day in place of Naminoue Beach and the market. Adding Chatan doesn’t mean keeping every Naha activity too. If a long evening in Chatan is your priority, that’s a reason to compare accommodation there instead of working around day-trip transport.

Itinerary B: 2 nights in the north and 1 in Naha for Churaumi Aquarium

This example assumes you have the time and energy to reach the north on arrival day, with transport such as a rental car arranged.

Day Suggested plan What not to squeeze into this day
Day 1 Travel from the airport to accommodation in the north, stopping for food and essential groceries Don’t commit to entering the aquarium on arrival day
Day 2 Make Churaumi Aquarium the main activity, with the remaining time for the coast around Motobu and breaks Don’t add shopping in Chatan or Naha on the same day
Day 3 Check out and travel to Naha; leave your luggage, then eat and shop Don’t fill the entire transfer day with sightseeing
Day 4 Travel from your Naha accommodation to the airport Don’t make long-distance sightseeing essential before your flight home

How long you spend at the aquarium depends on the exhibits you choose, meals and breaks. Instead of assuming you’ll finish in the morning, check the day’s hours and the exhibits you want to see on the official website, and keep the afternoon flexible.Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: official website

On day 3, plan what happens to your luggage between leaving one property and entering the next. If you’re driving, consider luggage capacity and whether you can stop at your accommodation before returning the car. Don’t assume luggage storage or early room access is available without confirmation.

Plan transport and departure day before booking

If you rent a car for fewer days, include collection and return in your itinerary

Yui Rail connects Naha Airport with areas including central Naha, with stations such as Miebashi, Makishi and Omoromachi. It doesn’t go directly to Chatan or Churaumi Aquarium. Choose transport separately for days around stations and days travelling farther afield.Yui Rail: route map

Staying 3 nights in Naha doesn’t automatically mean you won’t need a car, and visiting the north doesn’t automatically require a 4-day rental. Compare parking during your stay and refuelling before return as well as the rental charge. If you reduce rental days, consider how much sightseeing time collection and return will take.

For driving in Japan with a Taiwan-issued licence, JAF lists the original licence and a prescribed Japanese translation as required documents. A translation you produce yourself may not be accepted. Check authorised issuers and required documents, and bring a passport that allows your entry date to be verified.JAF: driving in Japan with a foreign licence

Choose your final night’s accommodation with checkout time in mind

The 3 Naha properties introduced at the end of this article all officially list check-in from 16:00 and checkout at 11:00. An afternoon or evening flight doesn’t mean you can keep using the room until then.Enjoy Maru 402, GIRASOL 301, AZUKI Heights 2F/3F

Work backwards on departure day:

  1. Read your airline’s airport-arrival guidance and check-in deadlines.
  2. Allow for rental-car return and travel from the rental office to the airport, or for getting to the station without a car.
  3. Add a buffer for traffic or missed transport, then decide when to leave your accommodation.
  4. Keep only breakfast or shopping that fits before that time.

Pack souvenirs by the final evening so departure day is available for anything you’ve forgotten to buy. Checking leftover chilled food, chargers and laundry the night before also reduces checkout tasks.

Common planning questions

Can I visit Naha, Chatan and Churaumi Aquarium in 3 nights and 4 days?

It may be possible depending on flights and transport, but you’ll have less time in each place. If you want all three, choose one priority and decide whether brief visits to the others would satisfy you. To include swimming or longer shopping sessions, dropping one destination gives you more time.

How should I change my beach day if it rains?

With 3 nights in Naha, you could swap the beach day with shopping at a shopping centre. Severe weather can also affect transport and shops, so indoor activities aren’t guaranteed to be available. Making the northern aquarium a last-minute alternative from Naha also adds a long journey.

Is distance from Kokusai Street enough to choose accommodation?

Compare the route back after dinner, the distance you’ll carry luggage to the nearest station, stairs and parking on driving days. The same walk can feel very different with shopping bags than with light day-trip belongings.

Staying in Naha? Choose a stay for your group and plans

Once you’ve planned the itinerary, compare the actual bedding, laundry facilities, stairs and parking. Don’t book on maximum occupancy alone; think through who will use each sleeping space.
